Sisters of the Fire: A Strong Cast of Fiery Characters

Sisters of the Fire is a character piece at heart, reveling in the lives of five sisters who have taken vastly different paths after the events of the previous book. I was fascinated by the depth of personality and uniqueness each of the sisters inhabits. It’s rare to find a fantasy novel that deals with multiple protagonists, much less five, and I felt like I knew each of these women deeply. One is an epic warrior in the vein of Bloody Rose who strikes fear into the hearts of her enemies. Another is deeply magical with elemental ties that provide some of the more awe-inspiring moments of the book. All of them travel on vastly different paths that are forever connected and we see them grow as their lives darken.

Sisters of the Fire centers on a setting that feels ancient, covered with forests that hide any number of creatures, both good and evil. At times, it feels as though we’re in a fairy tale, treading along toward the shock and awe of a dark and foreboding teaching moment. The magic takes on the same likeness, known to the world yet reserved for the select few who can master it. There are a few truly terrifying instances that show just how powerful this world’s hidden forces can be.

There are, of course, plenty of battles, creatures, and deeply-wrought situations. The fight scenes are well choreographed, and the creatures fascinating. Through it all, we have Wilkins’ mastery of character-driven storytelling leading the way.

NOTE: I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
