The Stylized Unicorn Escapes Its Poster in a Seattle Teenager’s Bedroom is a deeply emotional tale, depicting a girl who struggles with the realities of the life she’s been given and her tentative place in the world. She retreats from her anger-filled home life and her unsupportive school environment into fantasy worlds from books and movies, trying desperately to find some sense of normalcy within the characters and plots. Her world continues to move on and she struggles to move along with it. Her struggles leap off the page, leaving you in a state of heartbreak as she tries so hard to make her life what she wants it to be.
We see her deal with friends dying, a parent dying, and multiple hospitalizations for mental illness. Through it all, she tries to minimize her love of fantasy worlds until she realizes it’s a deep part of her and she shouldn’t hide herself. The ending left me choked up and in awe of the author’s ability to create such a powerful character many can identify with.
The Stylized Unicorn Escapes Its Poster in a Seattle Teenager’s Bedroom is a beautiful story, filled with brilliant writing and tragic realities. This is a powerful story that shows how fantasy worlds can become lifelines to those in need of an escape. In the end, they become a part of our realities, giving us new perspectives on the world and our place in it.
